The first hurdle in UX projects is often people who think they already know everything about their customers. Important here: a distinction must be made between market and UX research. Market studies look at broad trends and customer purchasing behavior. UX research examines the individual behaviors of customers when using a product.
To develop great products, we need iterations—that is, we must test our idea, adjust it, and then test again. Only when we've finally reached an iteration stage that is significantly better than the last version or the competitor's product have we achieved our goal. This usually takes some time, but is necessary.
UX should not be understood as a standard process that can be applied the same way for every product. Just as every product and every user group is unique, so too should every development process be unique.
To design products that your customers love to use, we must test. Even if UX experts are on board the development team, they do not represent your users. Testing with future users is the only assurance we have to determine whether the product is developing in the right direction.
Usability is important. But User Experience is more. Usability is the minimum requirement that a market-ready product should meet. As the authors at interaction-design aptly put it: UX encompasses everything that makes the difference between "it works" and "it wows"!
