How UseTree and ambulance partners have been developing the ALS app over the years in a user-centred way.

amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive, incurable neurodegenerative disease. For those affected, this means living with a changing body and making regular decisions about their own care. At the same time, doctors and researchers depend on reliable historical data to improve therapy, care and findings.
Ambulance partner had the goal of combining these requirements in one app. An application that provides patients with guidance on the course of the disease, supports them in everyday life and at the same time helps to record relevant health values in a structured manner. The challenge was to convey sensitive information in such a way that it remains understandable and does not become an additional burden.

UseTree has accompanied the ALS app as a long-term UX partner since the initial conception. From the outset, the focus was on how health values and historical information can be communicated in such a way that they remain manageable for those affected and are medically reliable.
A central element of the app is a structured questionnaire for regular self-assessment of the course of the disease. This self-assessment is emotionally demanding for many patients, as it makes their own condition visible. At the same time, it is highly medically relevant.
UseTree worked together with ambulance partners to make this process understandable, respectful and transparent. Language, structure and interaction were deliberately kept quiet. The benefits for care and research were clearly explained. Regular tests with the target group accompanied the development. These tests required particular consideration, as motor limitations, changing resilience and individual communication requirements make classic test formats impossible.

The ALS app combines orientation in the course of the disease, support in care and the opportunity to participate in research projects in a clearly structured application. Health values and historical data are presented in such a way that they remain classifiable and do not have an effect in isolation.
The UX and UI concept of the ALS app was described in two scientific publications in neurological journals. The studies show that patients' self-assessment of the course of the disease in the app is equivalent to medical progress assessment in outpatient clinics.
This made it possible to prove that patients with severe motor disabilities do not necessarily have to visit the outpatient clinic for every follow-up assessment. Instead, they can use their self-assessment from the app and incorporate it into medical care.
Through long-term, iterative development and continuous testing with ALS patients, the app was adapted step by step to real requirements and ensured its usability.

The ALS app helps people deal with a serious illness without overwhelming them. It makes it easier to communicate health values, provides orientation and strengthens cooperation between patients, doctors and research.
At the same time, there is clear social added value. The app reduces unnecessary routes for patients with motor disabilities, relieves the burden on care systems and provides scientifically reliable historical data. The long-term partnership ensures that this balance between humanity, medical quality and digital solution is maintained over the long term.

“The new ALS app is an important step forward for our patients. UseTree played a significant role in shaping the design and interaction options and thus made a significant contribution to the success of the application. I would like to thank you very much for that. ”
